Private Rowing Clubs

Along with two club teams, the Pocock Rowing Center also houses three private rowing clubs. These clubs are open to new members, but also each have their own individual identity and rowing focus.

Charley McIntyre Rowing Club

Charley McIntyre

CMRC is a masters, coed, recreational sculling club that combines our enjoyment of rowing with staying fit and lively camaraderie. We schedule regular weekend sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 8-9:00 am. Some members also row on one or two weekday mornings. We communicate about our weekly rowing schedules by email. CMRC does not row competitively as a club.

Our current members range from their 50’s to their 70’s. Because of members’ varied schedules and interests, we accommodate flexible participation by using a quad, two doubles and two singles as our numbers dictate. We periodically schedule sessions with a coach to keep honing our skills and are currently working with Frank Cunningham. Most members row weekly; some of our retired members miss rowing while traveling. We row year-round, with below-freezing weather and wind being about the only things that keep us off the water.

CMRC was founded by rowing and coaching legend Charley McIntyre, who passed away in 2009. We continue to use the George Pocock/Thames rowing style Charley taught, where the blade is not squared at the catch, but are able to bring in rowers who have learned other styles.

Pocock Rowing Center membership is a prerequisite to CMRC participation, and its annual dues are $665 in 2012. Those dues are paid directly to the Pocock Center and may be paid quarterly. Pocock dues provide the club access to the boathouse and its facilities, including exercise equipment, and also use of Pocock Center boats beyond those we own. Additional CMRC club dues of approximately $60-80/quarter cover our rack fees and boat maintenance, and flex depending on the actual club membership size. Coaching sessions are paid for separately by those participating.

We believe our key benefits as a club are our recreational rowing and our flexible participation. Our practice allows us to maintain fitness and enjoy our beautiful northwest waters while accommodating travel, personal and work commitments that prevent a regular schedule of attendance.

We welcome intermediate masters rowers who are comfortable in a double or quad, and encourage all members to learn to row one of our singles to help maintain our fleet flexibility.

Come row with CMRC and see if our flexible schedule and informal style is right for you.

Contact Karen McElhinney (425 891-1052; donnellyt@msn.com) or Kae Hutchison (206 276-8733; kaehutchison@comcast.net) to schedule a session with us.

Ancient Mariners Rowing Club

Ancient Mariners

AMRC welcomes and invites senior masters rowers to experience a dynamic, inclusive program designed to meet both fitness and competitive needs.

The Club was formed in 1989.  The “Mariners” share a well-regarded national status among men’s masters rowing teams with numerous world, national and regional titles.   A full-time coach is employed to aid the rowers in honing their racing skills.   The Club welcomes both sweep rowers and scullers,  although the emphasis is generally on sweep rowing.

AMRC is one of the original Pocock Rowing Center tenants with a fleet of state-of-the-art rowing shells manufactured for the Mariners by Pocock Racing Shells, Inc.   The fleet includes: 2 coxed 8s, a coxed 4 and two straight fours.   Team member’s ownership of various singles and doubles also enables the coach to satisfy most daily boating assignments.

AMRC welcomes experienced sweep rowers or scullers.  Please accept a cordial invitation to come row with the Ancient Mariners.  You will be welcomed by athletes from their 50s to their 80s from all walks of life with a common passion for sweep rowing and sculling at a competitive level.
